gorgeous george: a weekend at the george in rye
Good morning brides-to-be! We’ve got a fabulous Friday lined up for you on b.loved with two pretty helpful posts! This morning we’re kicking off with a review of a gorgeous East Sussex wedding venue, The George in Rye.
I’m not one to promote suppliers for the most important day of your life without a bit of first-hand experience. So when Anneli and I got the chance to visit The George in Rye one rainy February weekend, of course we jumped at the chance! Armed with Anneli’s camera we took the scenic journey down to the coast for some R&R.
Rye itself is a picture-perfect town, perched on a hill-top just two miles from the beautiful beaches of Camber Sands, perfect for a relaxing pre-wedding weekend away, or a beautifully romantic wedding. It’s filled with quirky, vintage stores that would do any trendy London borough proud, traditional café’s (perfect for cream teas), stylish restaurants and bars. It’s a picturesque backdrop for wedding photo’s, with a quaint English vibe and a white sand beach just down the road for seaside bridal portraits.
As we arrived at the hotel, we were welcomed by warm smiles and friendly faces at reception, a cosy space with contemporary British charm. In every corner a beautiful and well-considered detail caught my eye, from antique paintings to more contemporary pieces. Events Manager Karen showed us around the wedding venue itself. Wow! After marrying at the beautiful Rye Town Hall, and announced by the town crier to friends, family and passers-by, couples wander down the quaint cobbled street to the entrance of The George. Once inside, guests are ushered into the very elegant grey-painted bar to enjoy canape’s and cocktails in sumptuous surroundings. The real show stopper however, is the light-filled ballroom! A stunning double-height space with huge sparkling chandeliers (oh, the chandeliers!), antique mirrors, beautiful bay windows and gorgeously pretty décor to match almost any wedding style! We looooove!!
As well as hosting wedding receptions for up to 120 guests, the Ballroom is licenced for civil ceremonies for up to 100 guests. There are also 34 bedrooms magically tucked away behind the original facade, which can be booked out for your guests; they’ll certainly have fun picking from the different design-led rooms! There’s a wonderful selection for all sense of styles, with more traditional rooms in the original 16th Century coach house, and cool contemporary designs in the modern outbuildings surrounding the sunny courtyard. We checked in to Room 23 above the courtyard, with luxurious linen, a sumptuous sofa for relaxing and beautifully designed details from the funky mood lighting, the uber-trendy radio and even an umbrella left in the wardrobe (particularly handy as mine was broken!). I’m a big critic of hotel details, and even I couldn’t find a thing out of place – even the bath mat was tied with personalised ribbon!!
After a stroll around town, and mentally purchasing practically everything in every shop (note: must go back soon!) we retreated to the cosiness of our room for a quick cup of tea before heading to The Rye Retreat for a quick pampering session! Our therapists were wonderful, describing our facial treatments with care and tailoring the products used to our individual requirements. After 45 minutes of total relaxation, we didn’t want to leave! The Rye Retreat is ideal for the stressed-out bride, offering relaxing treatments and massages for pre-wedding pampering, as well as hair styling and makeup for on the day beauty, and it’s just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Perfect!
As the sun set, we popped downstairs to relax in the bar with a few expertly recommended cocktails before heading to the grill for dinner. Yet another amazing treat, as we arrived just in time to enjoy the last of the local scallops from the Rye Scallop Festival! Melt-in-the-mouth delicious starters were followed by a juicy piece of lamb for me, and succulent steak for Anneli before finishing off with chocolatey churro’s and the stickiest and most delicious sticky toffee pudding! After a very comfy night’s sleep and a lazy breakfast, of the best locally-source produce, we checked out with a smile on our faces after a wonderful weekend!
The George in Rye is now firmly on my list of favourite wedding venues and romantic retreats! Brides and grooms looking for a trendy, yet relaxed wedding in beautiful surroundings, not far from London but worlds away from the noise and bustle of the city, the gorgeous George is the perfect choice! Not only is the location and interior beautiful, but I guarantee you will be so well looked after you’ll never want to leave! Get in touch with Karen to arrange a viewing – and tell us all about it!!
