#110: desert dreams

Hello lovely readers!  Can you believe it’s really June? Practically half way through the year already, and we’ve yet to see a proper glimpse of Summer.  I hope June is the month we get some proper sunshine and warmth for all you lovely Summer brides!

I’ve been lucky to have ventured away from the UK for a few days this month, over each bank holiday, to Dubai.  The last time, we hired a car and went exploring, venturing out of the city a little and inland towards the desert.  As we were travelling through the barren landscapes, the low scrub and sand dunes it got me thinking about those of you planning destination weddings. I’m pretty sure you haven’t considered a desert wedding, yet…

Wouldn’t the pale sand and blue skies make the perfect canvas?  The natural rise and fall of the dunes create ‘rooms’ in which guests can celebrate the different parts of your wedding day.  I love the idea of mixing Eastern and Western styles – the contemporary simplicity of Western design contrasting beautifully with the ornate, intricate designs of the East.  The bride wears a light, unstructured couture gown, the clean lines of Amanda Wakeley or Temperley, accessorised with necklaces and foot jewellery worthy of an Arabian Princess.  A simple ceremony in the sand, plain white sails providing protection from the sun, hung with lanterns and candles for an intimate glow.  The flowers and foliage of the desert are hard and enduring, no roses or peonies here, they are architectural, structured and beautiful in their own way.  Succulents, air plants and branches make for striking arrangements both as bouquets and table arrangements displayed in the traditional gold and silverware of the Middle East, while empty bottles act as candle holders. A colour palette of sand and rusty colours teamed with clean, crisp white blend with the landscape.  The key is simplicity, remember the motto “leave nothing but footprints“.

Whilst I’ve been inspired by the beauty of the Arabian desert, there’s no reason this look couldn’t be translated to the beautiful deserts of Africa, Namibia or the Kalahari, Mexico or California… or even the sandy beaches of the UK with a little imagination…

I travel! If you’re getting married abroad and need styling or design help, get in touch to find out more about my International services!

Beautiful details! Really liking that bouquet, and the succulents arranged in the bowl.
